Wichita, we can all breathe a sigh of relief: We’re getting a new driver’s license office

Wichita, we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

The Kansas Department of Revenue has decided to open a second driver’s license office in the city.

“It helps reduce lines and those wait times,” said Zach Fletcher, the department’s public information officer.

“This just gives more options to people and sort of spreads that load out a little bit.”

The office will be at the Kellogg Crossing shopping center at Kellogg and Tyler. It will be in about 10,000 square feet just to the west of Side Pockets.

Fletcher said the Legislature approved an annual lease of $127,300.

“By summer vacation is when we’re wanting to open it.”

The only other Wichita driver’s license office is in the Twin Lakes shopping center at 21st and Amidon.

There are also area offices in Derby and Andover.

At Kellogg Crossing, Fletcher said, “From what we’ve been able to tell, it’s actually the geographic center of Sedgwick County.”

There will be 14 work stations where drivers can renew their licenses and work on what Fletcher calls solutions to driving problems, such as suspensions.

Drivers also will have the option to use their phones or computers to schedule appointments ahead of going to the bureau.

Even with that schedule-ahead option, Twin Lakes is often still crowded.

Fletcher said the new office is “mainly to help alleviate some of that space issue that we have . . . and just to offer another location within that area.”

There also will be an area within the new space for employees and county clerks to have a training space so they can do training without having to drive to Topeka.

“It’ll create a central location,” Fletcher said.

Jake Ramstack and Mark Murphy of InSite Real Estate Group handled the deal for the space.

Fletcher said this is the only new office to announce. The department has no other offices or renovations planned in the area.
