Goodwill starts construction on $5 million facility at 29th and Greenwich Rd

Eight months after Goodwill Industries of Kansas announced it would be bringing a retail location to one of the city’s fastest-growing areas, the project has now launched.

The Wichita-based nonprofit broke ground Thursday on a 25,000 square-foot facility, with a 12,000 square-foot sales floor, near the southwest corner of 29th and Greenwich in northeast Wichita.

Goodwill said the $5.1 million project near Scheels Stryker Sports Complex and Topgolf should be wrapped — and the store opened — by early 2024.

“This area of the city is experiencing a tremendous amount of growth, so it makes perfect sense for us to place a retail store and donation center in this rapidly-expanding area,” said Laura Ritterbush, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kansas, when the project was first announced last September.

Dondlinger Construction is the general contractor, and Schaefer Architecture (formerly SJCF Architecture) designed the building.

ReeceNichols South Central Kansas worked with Goodwill on the land purchase, and Brad Saville, CEO and founder of Landmark Commercial Real Estate, is the developer and represented the seller.

Goodwill said the facility will have 50 employees, and it is expected to help bring in added dollars that will allow it to do more in the community. That includes its work with NexStep Alliance, which provides adult education services — including GED, English as a second language classes and more.

“The addition of a new store will help Goodwill generate the funds necessary to support the expansion of mission services like NexStep Alliance and provide support services for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment,” the nonprofit said in a May 11 post on its website.

Goodwill has 18 stores throughout Kansas, and the new location will be its sixth in Wichita.
