19 Sep Goodwill growing: Nonprofit plans new retail location in northeast Wichita
Goodwill Industries of Kansas is planning to increase its Wichita presence by opening a new retail location in one of the hottest areas of the city for development.
The locally-based nonprofit announced Friday it has purchased 2.2 acres near the southwest corner of 29th and Greenwich Road in northeast Wichita, in close proximity to the under-construction Topgolf and other planned development in the area.Goodwill aims to break ground this fall — with the opening date to be determined — on a 25,000 square-foot facility with a 12,000 square-foot sales floor.
“This area of the city is experiencing a tremendous amount of growth, so it makes perfect sense for us to place a retail store and donation center in this rapidly-expanding area,” said Laura Ritterbush, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kansas, in a news release.
ReeceNichols South Central Kansas worked with Goodwill on the land deal, and Brad Saville, CEO and founder of Landmark Commercial Real Estate, is the developer for the project and represented the seller.
SJCF Architecture is leading the design effort. A general contractor has not been selected.
Financial terms of the deal and projected costs were not disclosed.
Goodwill said the new store could add up to 50 jobs and will feature a new customer experience.
“We’re in the process of updating the look and feel of our next generation of stores, one that draws a clear line connecting the purchases and donations our customers make, and the community impact our mission provides to our territory,” said Angela Bascue, vice president of retail.
Goodwill said funds generated from a new retail location are expected to allow it to expand its mission services, including those involving NexStep Alliance, which provides English as a second language (ESL) classes and GED classes.
The store would be Goodwill’s sixth in the city. Among its 18 retail locations in Kansas, it also has stores in Andover, Derby, El Dorado, Maize and Newton.
