A deal that would bring Sonic Happy Hour to downtown Wichita is set to close today.

Sonic Drive-In plans to open a downtown Wichita location before year’s end.

An 1,800-square-foot restaurant will be built at 504 S. Broadway, a site that is near the southeast corner of the intersection of Broadway and Douglas.

Sonic is purchasing the building for an undisclosed price. The sale is expected to close Friday.

The building, which until recently housed Golden House Chinese Restaurant, will be razed to make room for the Sonic.

“We want to get under way on this project as soon as possible,” says David Leyh, an associate broker with Landmark Commercial Real Estate who is representing Sonic in the deal.

Leyh has worked with Sonic as a broker for the past 15 years. Patrick Ritchie, formerly of J.P. Weigand & Sons Inc., represented the seller. He is transitioning to a new role as assistant vice president for Bank SNB.

Leyh says Sonic has been looking to add a downtown Wichita location for some time, and the South Broadway site will give the restaurant high visibility in close proximity to many of the businesses in the city’s core.

The Sonic, Leyh says, will feature dual drive-through lanes as well as the traditional car-stops for which the restaurant chain is known.
