Former Doc’s Steak House to be home to Mexican restaurant

A new restaurant is coming to 1515 N. Broadway where Doc’s Steak House had been from 1952 until it closed in late 2014.

A couple who currently has a traditional Mexican restaurant will be moving to the space.

The restaurateurs don’t want to be named yet, but Bernardo Flores of Fiesta Real Estateconfirms the sale of the building.

He and Don Piros of Landmark Commercial Real Estate handled the deal.

“The facade of that old Doc’s Steak House, it looks pretty nice,” Flores says.

“The atmosphere is much better,” he says of the space. “It’s very pleasant.”

However, it needs updating, Flores says.

“They’re starting to remodel,” he says. “Everything inside was date 1960s. It’s going to be brighter colors.”

Until he was involved with the sale of the building, Flores says, he didn’t know its history. He says it started as a house.

“The restaurant grew around the house,” he says. “Very unique. It’s very special.”

There will be 180 seats at the new restaurant, which won’t be strictly Mexican food.

“They’re going to be more diverse,” Flores says.

There will be steaks and burgers “to try to attract more of the old Doc’s Steak House clientele, because that clientele was very loyal for 60 years.”

There will be some Tex-Mex food, too, such as burritos.

There’s no word on whether the new restaurant will re-create Doc’s famous garlic salad.

Look for more information closer to the time the restaurant opens late this summer.
