14 Jul Longtime north Wichita restaurant making plans to move west
Cortez Mexican Restaurant’s owners want to move to the west side.
Mary and Enrique Cortez, who have run their restaurant since 1985, have put their cavernous building at 344 W. 29th St. N. up for sale. They don’t want to close, though. They want to find a smaller space to relocate, preferably on the city’s busier west side.
“People aren’t going up north just like they did,” Mary Cortez said. “This whole week, the railroad tracks are closed at Broadway, and people can’t even come for lunch.”
The restaurant is still open, though, and will continue to be until moving plans are finalized, she said.
Mary Cortez said they already have had some interest in the building, which is large and could be used for anything. She and her husband want to start looking for a new spot soon, and their preferred area is somewhere on Tyler or Maize Road. Her customers who know about their plans are full of suggestions about where they should move, she said with a laugh.
The couple has been considering moving for a while as business has slowed in the area. Last summer, they celebrated the restaurant’s 30th anniversary.
Stay tuned for updates.
